\"Tremolite<\/p>\n

Science & Origin of Tremolite<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Tremolite Crystal is composed of silicate minerals, the main being asbestos. It is a member of the amphibole group. It crystallizes in the form of masses, fibrous aggregates, and prismatic crystals.<\/p>\n

Tremolite Crystal was named by Johann Georg Albrecht H\u00f6pfner in 1789. He named it after the Tremola Valley in Central St Gotthard Massif, Tessin, Switzerland.<\/p>\n

After much debate in modern times, it is believed that the type locality material was discovered 14km south in present-day Campolungo Pass, Switzerland. You can find Tremolite in white, grey, colorless, green, and yellow varieties. It is safe and healthy to hold in polished form. It should be avoided in raw fibrous form, where it is most toxic.<\/p>\n

The Libby Mine<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Libby Mine in Montana was a popular vermiculite mine that was operated during the 1920s by the Zonolite company. This mine was purchased in 1963 by W.R. Grace who operated it up until 1990. It\u2019s speculated that this mine provided upwards of 80% of the world’s Vermiculite at one point.<\/p>\n

Commercial Vermiculite was heated, crushed, and used for insulation products. Unfortunately, the mine was contaminated with Tremolite asbestos. It is believed around 35 million homes, schools, and workspaces were contaminated in the United States.<\/p>\n

Other uses of Vermiculite included being a primary ingredient in paving, mulching, brake lines, waste treatment, fire protection, and egg incubation. The impact of asbestos is ongoing. It is believed that over 200 residents from the town of Libby died from the exposure. Others are expected to suffer from life-long asbestos-related diseases.<\/p>\n

Unique Properties<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Tremolite is a unique mineral that\u2019s also a variety of Nephrite. One of the two materials that make up Jade (the other being Jadeite). It also crystallizes into Diopside at high temperatures. This lead miners and geologists to believe that if they struck Tremolite, then Diopside crystals may be soon to follow.<\/p>\n
