The mineral was first reported in 77 A.D. by Gaius Plinius Secundus (Pliny the Elder). It was named after the Greek word \u201cclaw\u201d or \u201cfingernail\u201d because of its similar resemblance. The name got its use because of the shape and brightness of the bands Onyx shows when sliced. A variety of colors are commonly found throughout various countries of the world.<\/p><p>These countries include Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Australia, South Africa, Madagascar, India, and the United States.<\/p><h2><strong>Ancient Uses<\/strong><\/h2><p>Onyx has been used for thousands of years and has a long history with many different civilizations. The Ancient Egyptians used Onyx in 3,000 B.C. to make pottery items and other utensils.
