Science & Origin of Zebradorite

Zebradorite Crystal, also known as Zebra Moonstone and Graphic Feldspar. It is a graphic quartz that crystallizes in massive formation in a granite Pegmatite. The crystal is a combination of Smoky Quartz and Feldspar that grew simultaneously together.

Graphic Quartz was chosen as its name initially. It was due to the script-like pattern the Smoky Quartz crystallizes as on the brown and tan parchment-colored feldspar matrix. Graphic comes from the Greek word “Graphos” meaning writing, but the name was ultimately changed as it became popular throughout the world.

It was slowly renamed to Zebradorite due to its resemblance to that animal’s unique textured pattern.

The crystal was originally found in a quarry in Madagascar. But there have been reports of a similar mineral found in Mexico.
